Since the Selkie Sisters are two different mer-people I thought it fitting for each of us to do an introduction of who we are. Starting off, I'm Mermaid Ava. I'm 24 years of age and a mer-momma to two lovable little guppies. I first became interested in mermaiding in 2014. The local Renaissance Fair here in Muskogee, Oklahoma has a mermaid pod and they were going to hold auditions for a new member. I immediately began researching what I would need to do in order to audition. Thanks to the kindness of a friend, I was given a monofin and began to practice with it.
It was definitely a lot harder than I thought, but I didn't give up. I missed the deadline for the mermaid auditions, but by then I didn't care. Mermaiding had taken a hold of me and I was eager to continue swimming. I continued on with my monofin, swimming in it every chance I got(which is hard to do when you are land locked from most waters except for pools). Eventually, I ordered my first fabric mermaid tail. I still own this tail and am looking into getting a second one.
The fabric tail is from The 2 Tails. It is their Catalina Sea Green. I've been told that green is a good color for my pale skin tone. I remember when I received my tail(wasn't that long of a wait) I remember getting the package and immediately opening it. I sort of wished I had done an un-boxing video for it. Anyway, I immediately put it on. I was stuck here at home at the time it happened so there was no hopping into water. The company had included a backpack for me to carry my tail in, as well as a slip of paper instructing me of the best way to put the tail on. I'm very happy with this tail and have swam in it a handful of times. It hasn't really worn out at all, its still skin tight when I put it on. It has recently acuired a small tear near the tip of my right fluke, but that's my fault. I'm going to have to order a pair of 'happy hats' to cover the tips of my flukes. As I stated above, I'm looking to order another fabric tail, and I plan on buying from The 2 Tails again.
Just this last summer(2015) I convinced Mermaid Eva to join me, I'm not sure what she thought at first, but she was definitely open to the idea. I showed her all the fun pictures and videos of fellow mermaids and that really sealed the deal. December of 2015 she finally took the plunge and has a tail of her own. It's a lovely blue and she looks absolutely amazing in it. I'm so glad that I have such an awesome mer-sister and best friend.
My mer-sister, Mermaid Eva recently found out that her apartment's pool allowed our tails, so of course we both rushed to grab our tails and hopped in the water. It wasn't a deep pool, only 4 foot, but it worked for us short mers.
I'd love to eventually turn this hobby of mine into a business, but I've got a long way to go before I'm even remotely ready for something like that. However, for those located here in Oklahoma, if you are reading this, I'd really love to do some free parties to "get my fins wet" and gather feedback on what parents and kids both would like to get from their mermaid experience. You can find me on Facebook, so please feel free to send me a message if you are looking to have a mermaid at your next party. I can do children's parties and adult parties(You are never too old to believe in mermaids!)
I hope to do a professional picture shoot sometime soon, but until then you can deal with this spur of the moment picture lol
I hope that you all have enjoyed this post and please feel free to leave a comment! You can follow me on Facebook, and make sure to like our Instagram!
Have a FIN-tastic day!!
